As well as instilling a sense of local pride, public art’s celebration or commemoration of what is unique or special about a place can be a huge driver for domestic and international tourism.
With experts predicting Perth could emerge as Australia’s new Public Art Capital, an opportunity to contribute via METRONET’s multibillion dollar investment in public transport infrastructure is front of mind for the program.
METRONET’s Public Art Strategy will help to explore the stories of our place and people more deeply and in different and unexpected ways. The program-wide approach supports the creation of a distinctive identity for station buildings and transport infrastructure helping to activate the station environment, structures and precincts to become stimulating and enjoyable for the community.
The Strategy draws inspiration from and responds to Perth’s Aboriginal and local culture, history, landscape and place, with a thematic framework built around the Gnarla Biddi story, Our Pathways.
Key to METRONET’s Public Art Strategy is providing opportunities for emerging creatives to develop their public art skills, through collaborations with more experienced public artists and fabricators and the translation of their work into design elements such as seating, ground treatments and landscape elements.
