Work on Claremont Station began on February 5 as part of building new turnback infrastructure and was expected to be completed by April 5 . While full Fremantle Line services will resume as planned on April 6. works on the 135-year-old station unearthed some heavily degraded elements which need to be replaced. This will delay the opening of Claremont Station by three weeks, to April 23.
The team is currently working to install turnback infrastructure, which allow for more services to run between Claremont and the CBD during peak times, boost network resilience during unplanned service disruptions, and allow for direct access to the new Airport Line from Claremont Station. As part of this work, the team were also working to upgrade the oldest station on the network.
Given its age, Claremont Station’s construction does not meet modern standards. The team found the bridge footings were not effectively connected when they were built, and the condition of the timber posts which hold up the platform were worse than expected. Though extensive audits of the station were conducted before this work started, these issues could not be seen until we began to excavate.
Built in 1886, Claremont Station is the oldest station on the network and to ensure the iconic building stands long into the future some extra work is needed before the Station can reopen.
That’s why the temporary closure of Claremont Station will extend by three weeks while specialist contractors integrate modern construction methodology and traditional techniques. This will include replacing the posts with specially fabricated ones to comply with State Heritage requirements, taking several weeks to manufacture.
Claremont Station will remain closed, with no trains stopping there until April 23. Until then, passengers should continue to use Showgrounds Station. Full Fremantle Line services will resume as planned on April 6.
