Tunnel Boring Machines breakthrough at Airport Central Station

  • 21 May 2018

TBM Sandy joined TBM Grace at Airport Central Station box after she broke through on Sunday and is the first time the machines have reappeared since they began tunnelling at Forrestfield in late 2017.

The TMB’s have now completed a quarter of their eight kilometre journey from Forrestfield to Bayswater. They will undergo a planned month-long maintenance program before resuming tunnelling to Redcliffe Station.

Premier Mark McGowan and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti were joined by Federal Urban Infrastructure and Cities Minister Paul Fletcher this weekend to inspect the two TBMs in the station box.

“The recent Federal Budget continued to deliver for the city-shaping METRONET projects, including commitments to the Morley-Ellenbrook Line, Byford Extension, Midland Station Project and the Lakelands Station business case,” said Federal Urban Infrastructure and Cities Minister Paul Fletcher.

“These breakthroughs are an exciting milestone for this METRONET project – the station construction workers and machine operators are to be congratulated,” said Premier Mark McGowan.

The $1.86 billion METRONET Forrestfield-Airport Link is jointly funded by State ($1.37b) and Federal ($490m) Governments and will provide a 20-minute direct link between the eastern foothills and the CBD – as well as the wider public transport network – via the airport.
