Armadale students collaborate on public art murals

  • 28 January 2025

Art students at Armadale Senior High School got the chance to work with renowned public artist George Domahidy late last year as part of the public art for the Byford Rail Extension Project.

With over 20 years’ experience in public art, George was an inspiring role model for the Year 8, 9 and 10 students guiding them through artistic technique workshops and teaching them about the vital role public art plays in enriching local communities.

Following the workshops, aspects of the students’ artwork were incorporated into two 40m long x 8m high murals that can now be spotted on the southern retaining walls in Armadale. The students were also lucky enough to help George paint parts of the murals.

George is passionate about mentoring young artists and hopes the experience inspired the students to continue refining their skills and stay engaged in their education.

"It was a pleasure working with the Armadale Senior High students and I’m excited to see how their creativity has contributed to the project. I hope that by sharing my knowledge, they can see there are real career opportunities suited to their artistic interests,” George said.

Integrating the students’ artwork not only adds vibrancy and diversity to the murals, it also fosters a sense of pride within the local community. Through this collaboration, the students have become an essential part of the artistic narrative that will be enjoyed by many for years to come.
