Ballajura Station receives sustainability rating

  • 11 December 2024

The new Ballajura Station, built as part of the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line Project, has achieved a 6 Star Green Star As Built - Railway Stations certification from the Green Building Council of Australia.

The rating represents world leadership in sustainability and makes Ballajura and Ellenbrook stations the highest scored Green Star train stations in Australia.

Sustainability initiatives that helped Ballajura Station achieve the rating include the use of innovative and sustainable materials, reducing energy and water consumption through construction and operation, and incorporating Indigenous design and endemic plants. A100kW solar power system was also installed at the station and contributes to a 46 per cent operational energy saving.

Project Sustainability Lead Virginia Castellano explains the rating highlights METRONET’s commitment to delivering world-leading, sustainable, and climate-resilient transport infrastructure.

“By integrating economic, social, and environmentally sustainable outcomes, we are setting a new standard for excellence in Australia. This milestone is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the project team and an unwavering dedication to innovation and sustainability."

The Morley-Ellenbrook Line Project has also been awarded a ‘Gold’ Design Rating by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s IS v2.0/2.1 rating scheme,  the first rail project to achieve certification utilising this approach.

Sustainability initiatives across the project demonstrate METRONET’s commitment to achieving outcomes under the METRONET Sustainability Strategy, with a focus on delivering projects in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Regular passenger services are now in place on the Ellenbrook Line.
