First test train for two METRONET projects

  • 21 January 2025

The METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link and Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project have reached a major milestone with the first test train running between Nicholson Road Station and Carlisle Station on Monday, 20 January.

The initial runs mark the beginning of a rigorous testing and commissioning program. Additional test runs in the coming weeks will ensure all infrastructure and systems meet the highest safety and performance standards before driver familiarisation starts in the lead up to passenger services.

Thornlie-Cockburn Link

  • 17.5 km of new track.
  • New stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road.
  • Upgrades to Thornlie and Cockburn Central stations.
  • First test train on the tracks departed at Nickolson Road on Monday 20 January.

Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project

  • Six level crossings removed by raising 4 km of rail over the road at Mint/Archer Street, Oats Street, Welshpool Road, Hamilton Street, Wharf Street and William Street.
  • New, modern elevated stations nearing completion at Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington and Beckenham.
  • Approximately six hectares of former rail land being converted into public space, named Long Park.
  • First test train on the Armadale Line arrived at the new Carlisle Station on Monday 20 January.

Timetables for train services and the supporting bus network for surrounding suburbs will be released before passenger services commence.
