Empowering Aboriginal businesses, jobs and culture

  • 26 November 2025

Guided by the Gnarla Biddi Aboriginal Engagement strategy, the project has proudly partnered with 35 Aboriginal-owned businesses, investing more than $36.9 million in services ranging from traffic management, catering, site cleaning and heritage work to cultural guidance and branding. Notably, 6.84 per cent of contracts over $50,000 were awarded to Aboriginal businesses, reflecting a genuine commitment to economic inclusion and cultural collaboration.

The project has also created real opportunities for Aboriginal employment and training. A standout story includes a group of six women who started with an Introduction to Civil course, with four going on to complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction, and two earned a Certificate III in Business Administration. In total, 4,185 Aboriginal employment opportunities were generated, making up four per cent of total project employment.

Aboriginal culture and creativity are woven into every part of the project. The project logo, designed by Yamatji and Noongar artist Darryl Bellotti, represents footsteps across Country, while Walking with Country shirts by Noongar artist Seantelle Walsh celebrate the six Noongar seasons. Public artworks by Aboriginal artists Seantelle Walsh, Dellas Bennell and Nigel Chadd now enrich the station precincts, telling local stories and honouring heritage.

The new stations stand as symbols of what can be achieved when people, culture, and community are placed at the heart of a project. The METRONET Byford Rail Extension project has created jobs, celebrated Aboriginal culture and strengthened community ties.
