Sustainability milestone for the new Midland Station Project

  • 8 September 2025

The METRONET New Midland Station Project has been awarded a 6 Star - Green Star Design rating by the Green Building Council of Australia – the highest possible rating, recognised internationally as demonstrating ‘World Leadership’ in sustainability.

This recognition reflects the passion, collaboration and commitment of the project team. While the target was a 5 Star rating, the team went above and beyond to deliver a station that sets the highest benchmark for sustainable transport infrastructure in WA.

Some of the key initiatives that made this achievement possible include:

  • Installation of solar photovoltaic panels generating up to 80kW of renewable energy
  • Significant water savings through efficient fixtures and drought-tolerant landscaping
  • Designing safe, resilient spaces that respond to climate change
  • Showcasing Midland’s heritage and culture to create a strong sense of place and identity
  • Delivering high-quality indoor environments with healthy air, natural light and comfortable acoustics
  • Supporting active and sustainable transport with train and bus connections, cycling facilities and walkability

Sustainability Manager, Sandi Evans, said “It has been a privilege to help shape a station that not only serves the community but also protects our environment and celebrates Midland’s unique identity. This milestone would not have been possible without the incredible effort of everyone involved – congratulations to the whole team for aiming higher and achieving it”.

The New Midland Station is expected to open in early 2026.
