Two projects move to next phase

  • 2 July 2018

WA Cabinet have endorsed the project definition plans for the Thornlie-Cockburn Link and Yanchep Rail Extension.

This is an important step as it means the general scope and contract method for the two projects are now approved, allowing the projects to move into the procurement phase for construction to begin in 2019.

Recognising the potential savings that can be achieved, the projects will be delivered together by one contractor, generating more than 3,000 jobs for Perth.

After the options analysis work during the business case phase, we knew the preferred solutions were:
•    Yanchep Rail Extension: Joondalup Line extension with three stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep
•    Thornlie-Cockburn Link: relocating the freight lines to make room for passenger rail from Thornlie to Cockburn Central with new stations at Nicholson and Ranford roads

Since then the METRONET Office with its partner agencies and stakeholders, have completed early engineering designs, environmental and ground analysis and land use planning to inform transport infrastructure design and construction requirements.

The result is a more detailed scope of each project, which will be used during procurement to select a contractor to deliver the work.

What’s next
The rail infrastructure procurement process will start in the coming month, with the contract awarded next year for construction to begin shortly after.

Planning for the areas around the stations will continue with the METRONET Office continuing conversations with key stakeholders.
