Bridging the digital gap

  • 28 July 2022

The Shenzen High Speed Rail with trains that travel at 250km/h, the 25,000 seat Dubai Sports Stadium and Abu Dhabi International Airport that covers 8,500 acres. They’re all large-scale infrastructure projects, but this isn’t all they have in common.

They’re also ventures Tyrone Padayachee has worked on during his career as a civil engineer and he is now applying this global experience to his role as Principal Digital Engineer on the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line Project.

Tyrone says his career naturally progressed from civil to digital engineering and as a champion of digital transformation, a key part of his role is to bridge the gap between professionals with decades of experience and those who have trained in the digital age.

“Digital transformation has the capacity to drive better construction outcomes and cost efficiencies and it’s my job to help others embrace this, manage information digitally and improve their skills and confidence in this space,” Tyrone said.

“I’m optimistic about the future and believe the rail industry, and even my own career, will move towards automation and our skill set will evolve over time. This means digital skills like scripting and coding taught in schools today will become more widespread as the industry grows.”

With multiple rail infrastructure projects under his belt, Tyrone encourages other engineers, consultants and construction workers to get involved in the rail industry.

“There’s so much complexity working with all the different systems in rail infrastructure and projects like the Morley-Ellenbrook Line offer the opportunity to interact with many disciplines that aren’t typical in a normal building or civil works project,” Tyrone said.

"Working on a rail infrastructure project will take your career to new levels.”
