New Midland Station

New Midland Station

After more than 50 years, Midland Station will have a new home bringing it closer to the heart of the Midland Town Centre. The new station location will improve connections to Midland Gate Shopping Centre and Midland Health Campus, while maintaining the railway’s central role to enhance work opportunities and community life in the area.

The Noongar place name for Midland is Mandjanup and the narrative is ‘The place where meetings take place for trade and exchange – an important meeting place’.

The project will replace the ageing station infrastructure with a modern facility including:

  • a new 12-stand bus interchange
  • multi-storey car park with more than 800 bays
  • secure bike parking
  • lifts and stairs.

The project will also connect the passenger rail network to the new Bellevue Railcar Manufacturing and Maintenance Facility, which will bring significant new employment to Midland.

Extension to Bellevue

The options analysis found that staging the extension to Bellevue after the new Midland Station is complete not only presents the best opportunity to manage the existing transport constraints in the Midland city centre but will also deliver the best land use outcomes.

In the meantime, work will continue in planning for a future rail extension to Bellevue or beyond.

Cale Street Level Crossing

As part of the project, the Helena Street level crossing will be removed and a replacement crossing will be built at Cale Street. The Cale Street level crossing will maintain efficient movement through the Midland town centre. Cale Street will be extended south across the rail corridor to Yelverton Drive and will include pedestrian mazes and vehicle boom gates. Traffic signals will be integrated with the surrounding road network.

When the Cale Street level crossing opens the Helena Street level crossing will close, allowing for the new Midland Station to be built to the east of Helena Street. The newly created level crossing at Cale Street will be the only temporary alternative for pedestrians wanting to cross the tracks while construction takes place on the new station. Once the station is operational, a 24/7 pedestrian overpass will provide an alternative option.

Construction on the Cale Street level crossing began in January 2024.
