At METRONET, we’re creating a safer, more efficient rail network across Perth and the METRONET Victoria Park- Canning Level Crossing Removal Project is at the forefront of this by removing up to 6 level crossings, reducing traffic congestion and ensuring seamless relocation of third-party-owned utilities. 
 

The project includes a range of utilities such as telecommunications, power, gas, drinking water, sewer, and stormwater assets - some of which have been in place for many years. A top priority is to protect and preserve these existing assets wherever possible. However, in some cases, relocation is necessary to enable works and the project team is carefully overseeing relocation of critical utilities to ensure a smooth and efficient transition. 

Elevating the rail also means relocation of vital infrastructure. This includes the careful repositioning of Western Power’s high-voltage overhead transmission powerlines, water trunk mains, and high-pressure gas pipes that intersect at existing level crossings like the William Street crossing in Beckenham. 

Relocating these aging assets as part of the project not only ensures the safety and efficiency of our network, but also extends the service life of these utilities. This results in improved service reliability and cost savings for the community. 

The relocation of services within the rail corridor during the shutdown is a well-planned and secure process, as there are no train movements, prioritising the safety of our dedicated workforce and the community. 

Our commitment to this was evident as early works for the project began in December 2022, well in advance of the Armadale/Thornlie Line Transformation. Significant utility relocations will be completed during the initial six months of the rail closure. The project team will continue these relocations in previously inaccessible areas after the rail reopen in mid-2025.
