Community names for the gantry cranes unveiled

  • 15 November 2023

In a wonderful celebration of collaboration and community involvement, the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project is delighted to announce the official names for the four impressive gantry cranes.

Residents, students, and workers in the project area embraced the chance to name the cranes that are responsible for lifting massive beams and concrete structure into place along the elevated rail. An impressive 199 creative submissions poured in during the two-week naming competition.

Following the votes cast by members of the project’s Community Reference Group, the Minister for Transport has now officially announced the chosen names!
Our winning pairs are: ‘Victor and Becky’, and ‘Kediny and Yira’.

‘Victor and Becky’ represent Victoria Park and Beckenham, reflecting the project connection between these areas.

Meanwhile, ‘Kediny and Yira’ are Noongar words meaning ‘carry’ and ‘high,’ adding a meaningful cultural touch to the cranes’ identities.

The chosen names will be proudly displayed on the cranes once they arrive onsite in January 2024. Thank you to everyone who participated in the naming competition.
