In December last year, we asked for help to design new skate zones for the youth plazas at Oats Street and Cannington stations on the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project. Two community workshops were held to discuss ideas in person, and a whopping 140 people shared their ideas through online surveys.
Here’s what the skaters had to say:
Most respondents preferred a mix of street and transition terrains with geometric architecture, and proposed a range of ramp styles (flat, curved and square), as well as scooter, box and gap jumps.
Other popular requests included shade, water fountains, and zones catering to all ages and abilities. A feature that created a lot of excitement is zones that will be partially underneath the rail viaduct, offering shade and protection from rain.
The design team will now review all feedback and assess the combination of usability and functionality needed to create exciting and engaging recreational skate spaces for users now and in the future.
