Custom-built gantry cranes are being used to lift concrete structures for Perth’s first elevated rail, as part of the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal Project. 

A gantry crane is a type of overhead crane that straddles an object or workspace and operates on wheels. By using these cranes, the footprint of works is significantly reduced as this type of crane will operate within the rail corridor which allows more trees and vegetation to be retained.

Manufactured in Italy, these cranes have been custom-designed to fit the exact specifications of the Armadale Line.

Each crane can lift 120 tonnes, with two required to operate at once for the project's maximum lift of 140 tonnes! 

Six gantry cranes will be used on the project and two are currently hard at work lifting and storing L-beams at the laydown storage site in Hazelmere.

A total of 530 L-beams will be installed to build 4.3 kilometres of dual rail.
