We put the call out and you delivered!
Following 1,300 submissions for our Micro Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) naming competition, we have a winner.
… Drum roll please 🥁🥁🥁…
The name is inspired by our friend, Jana Edmondson, a 13-year-old Coogee resident. Jana lives with cerebral palsy, but despite her condition, one of Jana’s favourite activities is to catch the train to Perth and chat with other passengers on her trip. Jana’s good will is infectious and her tenacity is the perfect spirit to embody the new MTBM.
‘Jana’ will drill twin 100m tunnels under the existing freight rail corridor near the Ranford Road Bridge to enable the relocation of a major water main through August and September.
Tunnel boring machines are traditionally given female names for good luck in honour of the patron saint of underground workers, Saint Barbara.
In other Thornlie-Cockburn Link news, work on Karel Avenue, a Main Roads WA project, including widening and lengthening the bridge over the freight railway lines has been completed to accommodate track duplication for METRONET’s new line.
